Three Majha districts account for 21 deaths in the
state Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh orders a probe into the matter and calls
for a statewide crackdown on illegal liquor.
In the last 48 hours, at least
21 people have succumbed to death in three districts of the Majha region of Punjab, after allegedly consuming spurious
liquor.
Punjab CM orders magisterial
inquiry:
A magisterial inquiry by Divisional Commissioner Jalandhar was ordered by the Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh into the deaths reported in Amritsar, Batala, and Tarn Taran. The final official figures of the deceased may increase as some are still under critical condition. The Punjab CM had ordered the police and excise department to crack down on illegal liquor, just two months ago before these deaths. Illegal liquor has been dampening the state’s revenues.

Batala, and Tarn Taran:
DGP Punjab Dinkar Gupta gave
details of the case and said that the first five deaths were reported from
Tangra and Mucchal villages in PS Tarsikka in Amritsar Rural on the late night
of June 29. Three further died the next evening under suspicious circumstances.
One person among them was hospitalized in critical condition at Sri Guru Ramdas
Hospital and later succumbed to death. The Muchhal village further reported two
more deaths while another two passed away in Batala city after the consumption
of spurious liquor. On Friday, Batala reported five more deaths with Tarn Taran
has registered four deaths due to the infamous illegal liquor consumption.
The state’s battle with the
brewing of the illegal liquor has not only led to lower revenues but has also
resulted in untimely deaths of its residents and police is catching all those
involved in making the bad liquor.
