Rare ‘Whale Vomit’ Recovered Near Meghani Nagar

In a major breakthrough against illegal wildlife trade, the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch has seized 2 kilograms of ambergris, a rare and banned substance derived from sperm whales. The contraband, often referred to as “whale vomit,” is valued at approximately ₹2 crore in the international market.

The seizure took place following a tip-off received by the police. Acting on the information, officials conducted a raid near Meghani Nagar Airport Road, where one person was apprehended with the banned material.

Accused Identified, Supplier Still at Large

The arrested individual has been identified as Raju alias Rajesh Punamchand Marwadi, a 43-year-old resident of Kalapinagar in Ahmedabad. He was caught red-handed while attempting to deal in the illegal substance.

During preliminary interrogation, Raju revealed that the ambergris had been supplied by a Mumbai-based associate, Ganesh Bachhraj Marwadi, who is currently absconding. Police have launched a manhunt to locate and arrest him.

Ambergris: Luxury Ingredient, But Banned in India

Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales and is used as a fixative in high-end perfumes. Despite its value, its trade is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act in India due to the endangered status of whales and the illegality of their exploitation.

Possession, sale, or transport of ambergris is considered a serious wildlife offense and can result in severe legal consequences.

Wider Smuggling Network Under Investigation

Officials have registered a case under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act and other applicable laws. The Crime Branch believes this seizure may be part of a larger wildlife smuggling network, and further investigation is underway to identify and arrest all those involved.

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to wildlife trafficking, as they continue their crackdown on illegal animal product trade.
