The SP chief had arrived at the UP police headquarters as party members called for Agarwal’s immediate release.

A case was filed against Agarwal on January 4 under the IT Act for making “indecent and derogatory remarks on social media,” according to Assistant CP, Hazratganj, Arvind Kumar Verma.

According to Lucknow Police Commissioner SB Shiradkar, the department had received numerous complaints about the Samajwadi Party media cell’s offensive tweets directed at numerous BJP spokespersons and journalists, some of whom were also targeted by the offensive language.

“We investigated the situation and gathered electronic evidence. Manish Jagan Agarwal, who was using this Twitter handle, was detained today. Similar measures will be taken if anyone engages in these activities again, Shiradkar warned.

“Those who speak the truth will be punished,” the SP chief declared.

“This isn’t just about one day; the BJP forces its members to use offensive language on purpose so that others will react.”
