Arijit Singh Retires from Playback Singing After Illustrious Career

Singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, bringing an end to a remarkable journey in Bollywood. The artist, who made his Hindi film debut in 2011 with “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2, expressed gratitude to his fans in a heartfelt Instagram post on New Year’s Day. His latest track, “Ghar Kab Aaoge” from Border 2, recently touched the hearts of millions, marking a beautiful conclusion to his playback singing career.

Arijit’s Stand on Artist Payments

In a 2023 interview with The Music Podcast, Arijit Singh raised critical concerns about payment practices in the film industry. He emphasized that producers and production houses should either “pay artists for their work or don’t assign them work.” The singer highlighted how artists often invest significantly more effort than initially agreed upon, yet receive lesser compensation than promised. He expressed frustration that discussions and decisions frequently remain verbal, leaving artists vulnerable to payment discrepancies.

Advocating for Industry Reforms

Arijit passionately advocated for a structured system for musicians and singers, similar to earlier session recording practices where artists received guaranteed payment regardless of whether their vocals appeared in the final version. He stressed the importance of a “guide in the music system” that ensures both credit and payment for all contributors. The singer believes this transparency would help musicians feel secure and valued in their work.

Throughout his career, Arijit Singh has delivered iconic songs including “Tum Hi Ho,” “Channa Mereya,” “Agar Tum Saath Ho,” and “Kesariya.” His departure from playback singing marks the end of an era while highlighting ongoing industry challenges that need addressing.
