A complaint against UK-based broadcaster BBC India has been registered by the Enforcement Directorate.

On Thursday, The Enforcement Directorate registered a complaint against BBC India for an alleged foreign exchange breach, says an official. 

This is not the first time an Indian agency has investigated the UK-based broadcaster. The firm offices in India were inspected in February of this year as part of an inquiry by income tax authorities. 

The BBC was entangled in a dispute over its documentary: The Modi Question, which was critical of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s actions at the time.

The ED has asked for some recordings of statements of some firm executives under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) conditions and also asked for some documents.  

What is FEMA? FEMA is a Foreign Exchange Management Act regulating the foreign exchange’s outflow and inflow.

Following the February searches, the income tax authorities stated that they uncovered discrepancies in BBC’s accounting books of account. The findings “indicate that tax has not been collected on certain remittances which have not been reported as income in India by the group’s foreign entities,” according to the statement.

Yet there is no official state came from BBC India.
