BJP Demands Atishi’s Arrest Over Sikh Guru Controversy

A major political controversy has erupted in Delhi following the BJP’s demand for the arrest of AAP MLA Atishi over alleged disrespectful comments about a Sikh guru. The accusations have triggered a heated dispute between the two parties, with the AAP dismissing the claims as fabricated and a distraction from pressing issues.

BJP Files Formal Complaint

On Wednesday, senior BJP leaders led by former MP Ramesh Bidhuri filed a police complaint alleging that Atishi made offensive remarks against Guru Tegh Bahadur in a video circulated on social media on January 7. The BJP claimed the comments were intentional and deeply hurt Sikh religious sentiments. The party demanded immediate registration of an FIR and Atishi’s arrest under relevant legal provisions. BJP leaders also announced plans to escalate the matter by visiting Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar on Thursday to raise the issue before the highest Sikh religious authority.

AAP Refutes Allegations

Atishi firmly rejected the allegations, calling them fabricated and a deliberate distortion of her words. She alleged that the BJP deliberately added false subtitles and inserted the guru’s name into her video to create controversy. In her defense, Atishi highlighted her family’s Sikh heritage, stating she would never intentionally disrespect a Sikh guru.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also backed Atishi, accusing the BJP of anti-Punjab and anti-Sikh politics. He condemned the party for inserting false content into the video and demanded an apology to the Sikh community. The controversy originated during Assembly discussions about a government event commemorating Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom anniversary, with BJP lawmakers claiming Atishi showed disrespect during the debate.
