BJP Chief Apologizes After Actor Riteish Defends Late Father’s Legacy

Maharashtra BJP chief Ravindra Chavan has apologized after his controversial remarks about former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh triggered significant political backlash. Speaking at an election rally in Latur on Monday, Chavan suggested that the influence and legacy of the late Congress leader would fade away. His comments sparked an emotional response from Riteish Deshmukh, the actor son of Vilasrao, who defended his father’s enduring impact on the city.

Riteish’s Emotional Response

Riteish Deshmukh posted a video statement saying, “I say with folded hands that the names of those who lived for the people are etched on their minds. What is written can be erased, but you can’t erase what is etched.” His powerful response resonated across social media, emphasizing that his father’s contributions to Latur remain irreplaceable and deeply valued by residents.

Political Fallout and Clarification

The Congress party strongly condemned Chavan’s remarks, accusing the BJP of arrogance and disrespect toward Vilasrao Deshmukh’s legacy. Congress leader and former minister Amit Deshmukh, the actor’s brother, called the statements “extremely unfortunate and deeply distressing.” Following the criticism, Chavan clarified that his comments were not politically motivated and apologized if they hurt the feelings of Deshmukh’s family. He emphasized that local body elections should focus on civic amenities and development rather than political legacies. Vilasrao Deshmukh served as Maharashtra’s chief minister twice, from 1999-2003 and 2004-2008, and remains a respected figure in Latur politics.
