Police will be on high alert in Delhi on Saturday because of the countrywide three-hour blocking of the state and national highways by farmers, who’ve been intensifying their protest through the ‘chakka jam’ towards the three agricultural laws.
As during ‘chakka jam,’ the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella group of the farmers’ unions demonstrating against farm laws, said emergency and critical services like ambulances and school buses would not be halted.
As Rakesh Tikait stated:
Even then, farmers’ leaders have also said that Delhi will not be affected by the chakka jam, which will start from 12 pm to 3 pm. Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, are also not going to experience any road blockade, but farmers protesting were asked to remain on standby, farm union leader Rakesh Tikait reported. Tikait is the Bharatiya Kisan Union’s spokesman and is one of the leaders spearheading the farmers’ campaign.
A strict watch by Delhi Police:
The Delhi Police is holding a strict watch in the city to prevent conflict and chaos during the farmers’ tractor rally on Republic Day, as it deployed thousands of officers and additional forces.
It claimed in a statement that about 50,000 police, paramilitary, and reserve personnel are on guard at different key points in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
Multilayered safety metrics were seen at the ITO intersection as police set out barbed wires across their barricades. Strong barricades were also placed near the Red Fort on Minto Lane.
Throughout the national capital, the police, however, has deployed drones to track the situation. At least 12 Metro platforms have also been placed on alert throughout the national capital.
The reason for conducting ‘Chakka jam’ by Farmers:
The ‘chakka jam’ is being conducted as a symbolic strike towards the suspension of the internet and extra security across the Delhi border protest areas. Thousands of peasants from various parts of the nation including Punjab, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh, have been protesting against the three farm laws implemented by the Centre since November last year.
Considering the farm reforms anti-farmers, the demonstrators are demanding that the laws be repealed. They are also seeking a statutory minimum support price (MSP) assurance for their goods.
