Indian wrestlers protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief as well as BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, expressed their disappointment on Thursday.

They stated that the accolades they received from the Indian government hold no value if they have to face mistreatment and harassment from the Delhi Police.

The wrestlers spoke to the media at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after a brawl with some police officers on Wednesday night when a few protesters tried to bring folding cots to the protest site.

The wrestlers protesting alleged that a drunken policeman misbehaved with the women wrestlers.

Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia offered to return the accolades, saying, “When they (policemen) were manhandling and abusing us, were they not able to see that the wrestlers are also Padma Shri (awardees).”

“I wasn’t the only one. Sakshi was also present.”

“If this is how we treat the wrestlers, what will we do with the medals?” Rather, we will go about our normal lives and hand over all medals and awards to the Indian government,” he added.

A reporter questioned Punia about whether he was referring to awards given by the government or medals won on international stages.

To this, Vinesh stated, “Saare le jao. Itni beizzati toh kar di hamari. Kuch bhi chhoda nahi (Take away everything. You have already insulted us a lot. There’s nothing left).

The wrestlers’ protest against the WFI president over allegations of sexual harassment has received support from several opposition parties.

A meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) MLAs, council members, and party executives has been scheduled for Thursday to discuss the situation.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat responded, “Listen, this is political,” when questioned if the protest had been “hijacked by political parties.”

Request that the Prime Minister meet with us. Have the home minister give us a call. Do justice for us. We are jeopardising both our lives and our careers.
