A 21-year-old law student died by suicide in his hostel room at Gujarat National Law University on Monday night. A group of third-year students from Patiala, Punjab, broke down Vansh Gaint’s door around midnight and found him unresponsive.
According to the police, a cloth was fastened to the door handle and the room was locked from the inside. Gaint’s roommate Pritesh had last spoken with him around 10 pm before leaving the hostel. Gaint didn’t answer the door when Pritesh came back at 11:30 p.m. The hostel warden was notified by concerned students. After multiple failed attempts to contact Gaint, they forced the door open. There was no suicide note in the room. The emergency response is inadequate. On the night of the incident, Vansh was alone in his room when he allegedly took his life. Before being rushed to SMVS hospital in the institute’s vehicle, which then referred him to Apollo hospital, he was cared for by an in-house nurse. GNLU cancelled Tuesday’s academic session and held a condolence meeting at the institute. “We have known him as an academically excellent student, always a smiling kind of person and very good in economics,” said newly appointed GNLU registrar Nitin Malik. Malik added, “We have heard that he was under therapy, though exact details of the type of therapy are still unknown,” when asked if Vansh had sought psychological counseling. Questions over campus facilities
Even though the institute urged students to talk to campus counselors for help with mental health, some students have complained about the lack of an ambulance, which meant that Vansh had to be driven to the hospital in a car. Malik clarified that the institute’s car is strategically parked near the boys and girls hostels at night for emergencies. “Two faculty members and students took Vansh in this car which also has a GNLU plaque on it. He elaborated, “We have a nurse on campus who checked Vansh as soon as students and authorities were informed.” Investigation underway
After receiving notification from authorities, Police Inspector V R Kher of Infocity’s police station brought his team to the university on Monday night. They took possession of Vansh’s mobile phone and laptop and conducted preliminary interviews with other students. Vansh’s maternal and paternal uncles arrived in Gandhinagar on Tuesday morning after the university informed his family. Police rule out foul play
A police official told Mirror, “Vansh suffered from depression and was taking counseling. Prima facie it seems he committed suicide. At this time, we do not believe any wrongdoing. We are awaiting the post mortem report.” Late on Tuesday evening, another police source said, “The panel post mortem report indicates that death was due to suicide. A forensic post mortem is underway.”
