Gujarat University’s popular sports ground, a favorite spot for both amateur and professional athletes, especially cricketers, is set for a major makeover. The university’s Board of Management recently approved plans to enhance the infrastructure of the sports ground, located near the Gujarat University Convention Centre. This development aims to not only provide better amenities for players but also install modern seating arrangements, transforming the venue into a potential site for professional sports events.
This decision is part of Gujarat University’s broader initiative to make use of underutilized land on the campus. Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta emphasized that the goal is to maximize the utility of available land while improving the facilities for both the city’s residents and university students. “The idea is to turn unused land into functional spaces, providing infrastructure that serves the community. With the planned facelift, the ground will become a prime venue for sports events right in the heart of the city,” she explained.
While specific details on the seating capacity are still under discussion, it is expected that the upgraded ground will accommodate thousands of spectators. Additionally, discussions are underway to relocate hostels within the campus area to make space for more academic blocks and other facilities. This realignment is part of a broader plan to streamline campus buildings, integrating both academic spaces and revenue-generating facilities.
Currently, the ground is open to everyone; however, with the new infrastructure, access may no longer be free. Some officials have raised concerns about the venue being used primarily as a revenue-generating space, which could potentially limit public access. “While having a sports ground in the middle of the city is a great asset, universities must ensure that it remains accessible to the public and doesn’t become a commercialized venue,” an official remarked.
In other developments, Gujarat University is also considering proposals for inter-university transfers for teachers. The Vice-Chancellor confirmed that the university would soon begin filling 47 teaching vacancies, with a possibility of hiring faculty from other state universities. This initiative is expected to bring fresh talent to Gujarat University and foster academic collaboration between institutions.
