Mumbai Indians (MI) completed a hat-trick of victories by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 25 of the IPL 2023 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. MI has now won 3 of their first five games.
Cameron Green (64 off 40) excelled with the bat, scoring his first IPL 2023 fifty, and was well supported by Ishan Kishan (38 off 31) as well as Tilak Varma (37 off 17) as MI scored a challenging 192/5.
Jason Behrendorff then set the tone with 2 early wickets as a collective bowling effort saw MI knock SRH out for 178 and win the match by 14 runs.
Chasing 193, SRH was thrown for a loop in the second over when Jason Behrendorff dismissed the in-form Harry Brook (9 off 7) for a duck. Brook appeared to be in fine form after hitting a pair of fours, including one off the previous delivery, but Behrendorff struck back strongly to bounce out the England hitter off the following ball. In his next over, the Australian pacer had Rahul Tripathi caught behind to leave SRH at 25/2.
Mayank Agarwal and Heinrich Klaasen fueled the SRH innings, but the orange army fell 14 runs short.
They are now one of the five teams with six points after five games, alongside Lucknow, Chennai, Gujarat, and Punjab. With eight points, the Rajasthan Royals retain a two-point lead over the chasing pack. KKR, RCB, and SRH all have four points, but Delhi Capitals have already been set adrift, having lost all of their games thus far and are firmly planted at the bottom of the league.
Faf du Plessis of the RCB is the current orange cap holder, with 259 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of 172. Venkatesh Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, and David Warner are the top five run scorers this season.
Yuzvendra Chahal, Mark Wood, and Rashid Khan are joint top wicket-takers with 11 wickets each. Mohammad Shami, as well as Tushar Deshpande have both taken 10 wickets in five matches so far.
When the Rajasthan Royals face the Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur on April 19, they will look to consolidate their lead even further.
