Heavy Rains Batter Gujarat, More Expected

Heavy rains continue to lash parts of Gujarat as the monsoon advances further into the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms and heavy showers over several districts in the coming days.

Despite widespread rain across much of Gujarat, the city of Ahmedabad remained dry on Tuesday. Though no rainfall was recorded, the city experienced cloudy skies and a maximum temperature of 36.4°C, which was 5.5°C below the normal for this time of year. The minimum temperature stood at 29.7°C, slightly above normal by 1.5°C. Residents did receive some relief from gusty winds that reached speeds of 50 to 60 km/h. Humidity levels were relatively high, measuring 79% in the morning and 56% by evening.

Rainfall activity was notably concentrated in South Gujarat, where most districts experienced moderate to heavy rain. Scattered showers were also observed in parts of North Gujarat and the Saurashtra region. However, the Kutch region remained dry during this period, maintaining its typically arid weather. Temperature variations across the state were mild, with South Gujarat registering slightly cooler than usual conditions, while North Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch recorded slightly warmer temperatures.

According to the IMD’s latest forecast, light to moderate rain or thundershowers will persist over many parts of Gujarat during the next three days. This includes most districts in North Gujarat, South Gujarat, and Saurashtra, as well as the union territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli. Kutch may witness isolated showers but is expected to remain largely dry. Starting from May 31, rainfall activity is projected to decrease, with only isolated rain expected mainly in parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra.

The IMD has issued a weather warning, highlighting the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets on Thursday. Districts likely to be affected include Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, and Tapi in South Gujarat, alongside Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli. Saurashtra districts such as Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Diu are also under alert. These regions may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Looking ahead to May 29, the IMD anticipates heavy rains in Dahod, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, and parts of Saurashtra. Strong gusty winds and thunderstorms could impact several districts across North Gujarat, South Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch, and Diu, potentially leading to localized disruptions.

Overall, the weather remains active across Gujarat, with monsoon rains providing much-needed moisture but also posing risks due to intense downpours and wind. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and stay updated on weather advisories as the monsoon progresses.
