High Vacancy Rates in Management Courses in Gujarat

The Gujarat government disclosed alarming statistics to the legislative assembly regarding the substantial number of vacant seats in engineering and management courses in the state in 2023.

More than 44 percent of engineering seats, encompassing both government and self-financed institutes, were left unfilled in 2023, totaling over 62,000 vacant seats across the state.

MBA and MCA Vacancies in Gujarat:

Official data presented in the state legislative assembly revealed that over 32 percent of seats in Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Application (MCA) courses remained unoccupied in the previous year, constituting 7,742 vacant seats.

Overview of Engineering Courses:

State Higher and Technical Education Minister Rushikesh Patel provided insights into seat distribution in engineering degree and diploma courses.

Out of 1,40,852 engineering seats in Gujarat’s government-run, grant-in-aid, and self-financed colleges, 71,629 seats belong to degree engineering courses, while 69,223 pertain to diploma engineering courses.

Vacancy Breakdown:

Minister Patel revealed that only 78,540 seats (55.76 percent) were filled in the previous year, leaving a substantial 44.23 percent vacant. Specifically, 38,811 degree engineering seats and 23,501 diploma engineering seats remained unoccupied in 2023.

Various factors contribute to the high vacancy rates, including low registration compared to available seats and students’ preference for prestigious engineering institutes like IITs and NITs in India and abroad.

Diploma College Admission Criteria in Gujarat:

Minister Patel cited the admission criteria for diploma colleges, highlighting that since admission only requires passing Class 10, many seats remain vacant as students opt for further education in Class 11 or pursue alternative courses such as IIT preparation and nursing.
