Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s acclaimed film Homebound, featuring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, has been officially shortlisted for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the news on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage. Producer Karan Johar expressed his overwhelming pride and emotion, celebrating the film’s remarkable journey from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival to the Oscar shortlist.

A Story of Ambition and Friendship

The film explores the compelling narratives of friendship, duty, and the challenges facing young India. It follows two childhood friends, Shoaib and Chandan, who share the dream of joining the police force. Through their journey, the movie delves into the complexities of relationships and aspirations in contemporary India, resonating with audiences worldwide.

Global Recognition and Path to Final Nominations

Homebound competes among 15 international films shortlisted in this category, which will eventually be narrowed down to five finalists. Other notable shortlisted films include Argentina’s Belén, South Korea’s No Other Choice, Palestine’s Palestine 36, and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab. The final nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026, with the 98th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for March 15, 2026, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.

The film premiered on Netflix on November 21 and has already garnered significant acclaim at major international film festivals, establishing itself as a strong contender in the awards season.
