IIM Kashipur Clarifies Viral Opt-Out Email, Reaffirms Support for Unplaced Students
IIM Kashipur has issued a formal clarification after a viral social media post raised concerns over an email asking students to opt out of campus placements. The institute explained that the communication was part of a standard audit process and reaffirmed its full support for students still seeking job opportunities.
The controversy began after a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user Siddharth Gopi alleged that IIM Kashipur had instructed unplaced students to opt out of the placement process, sparking public debate and confusion. The post quickly gained traction, prompting the institute to release an official statement.
In its clarification, IIM Kashipur stated that the email in question was sent by the Student Placement Committee and was “a routine part of data collection” to ensure accuracy in placement reporting. The institute follows the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS), under which it has released third-party audited placement reports for the last two years.
“These declarations are essential for accurately categorising students who either choose to pursue jobs independently, take up entrepreneurial ventures, or opt for higher studies,” the institute said. “Without such documentation, these students could be incorrectly marked as ‘unplaced’ in the official report, which would distort the data.”
According to the institute, students are required to submit a signed declaration if they are voluntarily opting out of the placement process. This helps maintain the integrity of placement statistics and gives a more realistic picture to recruiters, stakeholders, and future students.
“The declaration process is designed to ensure that the placement data reflects the actual status of every student. It is not meant to pressure or exclude anyone from receiving support,” the official statement emphasized.
IIM Kashipur also clarified that all unplaced students will continue to receive full support from the placement office. This includes job search assistance, access to recruiter networks, and counselling services. “We remain committed to helping every student find a suitable career path,” the statement read.
The institute added that more than 180 companies have been invited for the ongoing placement season, indicating strong corporate engagement despite the challenging job market. The official audited placement report for the current cycle will be published soon on the IIM Kashipur website.
The clarification aims to put concerns to rest and reaffirm the institute’s commitment to transparency, accuracy, and student welfare. IIM Kashipur reiterated that student trust and integrity in reporting remain top priorities and urged the public not to misinterpret internal communication shared out of context.
