IMD reports that Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into a cyclonic storm.

Cyclon Tauktae, which is now focused over Lakshadweep, strengthened into a cyclonic tempest on Saturday morning, as per a tweet by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“Profound Depression heightened into a Cyclonic Storm “Tauktae” (articulated as Tau’Te) over Lakshadweep region and bordering southeast and east-central the Arabian Sea: Cyclone watch for south Gujarat and Diu coasts,” IMD tweeted.

As the western shoreline of India prepares for the tornado to make landfall, the Indian Navy has guaranteed the state organizations of their help. 

“Indian Navy ships, airplane, helicopters, plunging and catastrophe help groups standby…for delivering full help to State organizations as Cyclonic Storm Tauktae approaches Western Coast of India,” a tweet by the Navy representative read. 

The IMD on Friday had forecast the storm:

In the interim, the IMD on Friday had figured the storm to increase into an ‘extreme cyclonic tempest’ with a wind speed of 150 to 160kmph by May 17. 

The typhoon will probably move north-eastwards at first for some additional time and afterwards move north-westwards and arrive at the Gujarat coast by May 18 morning, as indicated by the climate division.

Another Tweet by IMD:

“Profound Depression over Lakshadweep territory and bordering southeast and the east-central Arabian Sea around 55 km north-northwest of Amini Divi. To heighten into a Cyclonic Storm through the next 12 hrs. 

To move north-northwestwards and reach close to Gujarat coast by eighteenth May morning,” IMD tweeted.

The authorities have sounded a red alert in five districts of Kerala:

The specialists have sounded a high alert in five regions of Kerala – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam – and have conveyed National Disaster Response Force in influenced spaces of the state. 

Mumbai and Thane, where the impact of the cyclone is required to be felt throughout the end of the week, has been put under the yellow class storm cautioning by the IMD. 

IMD’s regional forecasting centre in Mumbai stated:

“The impact of the tempest in Maharashtra is probably going to die down after May 17 (Monday) as it would travel northwestwards towards Gujarat around May 18,” an authority with IMD’s territorial guaging focus in Mumbai said.
