Laser Beam Aimed at Dubai-Chennai Flight During Landing, Plane Lands Safely
A green laser beam was pointed at a Dubai-to-Chennai flight on Sunday night as it was preparing to land at the Chennai International Airport, prompting serious safety concerns and triggering an investigation by local authorities.
According to sources, the laser beam was directed at the cockpit of the aircraft, carrying 326 passengers, just moments before landing. The bright green light temporarily impaired visibility in the cockpit, creating a potentially dangerous situation for the pilots. The incident occurred within the airport’s vicinity, close enough to affect the final approach of the aircraft.
Despite the disruption, the pilots were able to safely land the flight. The crew immediately reported the laser interference to Air Traffic Control (ATC), which in turn alerted airport security and local law enforcement. The aircraft landed without any physical damage, and no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Initial reports suggest that the laser was flashed from a nearby area during the aircraft’s descent, possibly from ground level, in what authorities are treating as a case of deliberate interference. Pointing a laser at an aircraft is considered a serious offence under aviation safety regulations, as it can distract or temporarily blind pilots during critical phases of flight such as landing or takeoff.
Following the incident, the Guindy and St Thomas Mount police were informed and have launched an investigation to identify the source of the laser. Officials are scanning the surrounding neighborhoods for any surveillance footage and have appealed to residents to report suspicious activity that may help in locating the individual or group responsible.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred near Indian airports. Aviation safety experts have repeatedly warned that laser attacks pose a growing risk to flight safety, particularly during night operations. In many countries, including India, laws prohibit the use of laser pointers in the vicinity of airports and flight paths.
Airport officials have reiterated the importance of public awareness in preventing such dangerous acts and have urged citizens to report any misuse of lasers in sensitive areas.
While the passengers on board escaped unharmed and the flight crew managed the situation professionally, the incident has once again highlighted the serious risks posed by laser interference with aircraft operations.
