Macron Amazed by Grand Maratha Welcome in Mumbai

French President Emmanuel Macron experienced a grand ‘Maratha welcome’ during his visit to Mumbai, leaving him amazed by the elaborate reception showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage. The visit marked a significant diplomatic engagement between India and France.

The French President arrived in India on February 17 to attend the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi. Upon his arrival in Mumbai, Macron was received by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the airport.

A Grand Cultural Reception

The highlight of his Mumbai stopover was the traditional Maratha welcome organized at a hotel, where PM Modi joined him. The reception featured an ‘aarti’ ceremony, choreographed dance performances, and a display of royal instruments, representing the grandeur of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy.

“Macron is lucky to witness a replication of the great legacy and grandeur of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” commented one user on social media. Another user added, “Respect to the attitude of the person portraying Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”

Following the cultural reception, PM Modi and Macron jointly inaugurated the ‘India-France Year of Innovation 2026’ at Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations.

Macron also surprised everyone by jogging along Mumbai’s Marine Drive the next morning, interacting casually with morning walkers despite his security detail. His down-to-earth behavior contrasted with typical presidential security protocols, impressing locals who witnessed the moment.

The French President then traveled to Delhi on February 18 to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026, being held at Bharat Mandapam from February 16 to 20. The summit brings together global leaders, policymakers, and tech innovators to discuss artificial intelligence’s future.
