PM Modi Arrives in Argentina for Historic Bilateral Visit After 57 Years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday evening (local time) for a historic two-day visit to Argentina, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 57 years. His previous visit to Argentina was in 2018, when he attended the G20 Summit, but this marks the first official bilateral engagement at the prime ministerial level since 1967.
Upon his arrival at Ezeiza International Airport, PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome. Sharing his excitement on social media platform X, he wrote, “Landed in Buenos Aires for a bilateral visit which will focus on augmenting relations with Argentina. I’m eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks with him.”
This visit is the third stop on the Prime Minister’s ongoing five-nation tour. Prior to Argentina, Modi visited Russia and Trinidad and Tobago, where he signed multiple agreements and was honored with ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’, becoming the first foreign leader to receive the nation’s highest civilian award.
During his stay in Argentina, PM Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with President Javier Milei. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions will aim to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in a wide range of sectors, including defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade, and investment.
“The bilateral visit of the Prime Minister will further deepen the multifaceted strategic partnership between India and Argentina,” the MEA said in a statement, underlining the significance of this long-awaited engagement.
In his departure statement before leaving for Argentina, Prime Minister Modi described the country as a “key economic partner in Latin America” and “a close collaborator in the G20.” He added, “We will focus on advancing our mutually beneficial cooperation, including in the areas of agriculture, critical minerals, energy, trade, tourism, technology, and investment.”
India and Argentina have shared warm diplomatic ties for decades, with increasing collaboration in both bilateral and multilateral platforms. The visit is expected to open new avenues of cooperation, particularly in sectors like lithium mining and green energy—areas where Argentina holds strategic importance.
Following his visit to Argentina, PM Modi will proceed to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, where leaders from major emerging economies will convene to discuss global governance, economic reforms, and sustainable development. He will conclude his tour with a state visit to Namibia, further underscoring India’s growing engagement with the Global South.
PM Modi’s visit to Argentina not only marks a diplomatic milestone but also reflects India’s intent to strengthen its footprint in Latin America through high-level strategic outreach.
