Monsoon in Gujarat: Nearly a month after the onset of the southwest monsoon in Gujarat, several districts have received only below 15 percent of the season’s average rainfall.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) rainfall data, the state average rainfall has reached 23 percent, with the Saurashtra region receiving the highest at 30 percent and East Central recording 15 percent.
Early Onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Gujarat:
The Southwest monsoon arrived in Gujarat on June 11, four days ahead of its normal arrival date of June 15. In 2023, the monsoon began on June 25, nearly 10 days later than usual, due to Cyclone Biparjoy hitting Gujarat.
Among the 33 districts, Devbhoomi Dwarka received the highest rainfall, at 50.85 percent, followed by Junagadh, at 46.18 percent, in the Saurashtra region. On the other hand, Anand recorded the lowest, at 11.08 percent.
Other districts with less than 15 percent rainfall include Dahod (11.20 percent), Aravalli (11.46 percent), Patan (12.5 percent), Mahisagar (13.96 percent), Surendranagar (14.5 percent), and Sabarkantha (14.99 percent).
Taluka-Wise Rainfall Data:
Among 251 talukas, Khambhalia in Devbhoomi Dwarka recorded the highest rainfall at 78.18 percent. Another taluka in the same district, Dwarka, recorded the second-highest rainfall at 58.26 percent this monsoon season. Out of 251 talukas, 22 received rainfall between 501 to 1000 mm. In June, 115 mm of rainfall was recorded; in July, 88.15 mm of rainfall was received in the state.
Following Devbhoomi Dwarka, six talukas in Junagadh district have received more than 50 percent average rainfall. These include Vanthali (57.75 percent), Visavadar (55.65 percent), Manavadar (54.04 percent), Junagadh city (52.62 percent), and Mendrada (51.02 percent).
Similarly, Babra, the only taluka in Amreli district that has received above 50 percent rainfall, recorded an average rainfall of 52.5 percent. Gariadhar and Mahuva in Bhavnagar have recorded 56.07 and 50.74 percent, respectively.
Southern and Kutch District Rainfall:
In the southern district, Olpad in Surat is the only taluka to have crossed 50 percent with 53.39 percent rainfall. Mundra and Mandvi, both in Kutch district, received 54.43 and 41.23 percent, respectively, whereas the district has recorded 25.63 percent rainfall.
Talukas with Minimal Rainfall of Monsoon in Gujarat:
Several talukas have not crossed the single-digit mark of average rainfall so far. Bhabhar in Banaskantha district has not received even 1 percent of the average rainfall, recording only 0.76 percent. Another taluka in the district, Amirgadh, has received 7.92 percent. Other talukas with minimal rainfall include Lakhpat (4.43 percent) in Kutch, Harij (3.35 percent), Radhanpur (5.36 percent), Sami (7.22 percent), and Shankeshwar (7.5 percent), all in Patan district.
Similarly, Malpur (5.53 percent) and Bayad (7.88 percent) in Aravalli, Vijaynagar (7.87 percent) in Sabarkantha, Kheralu (6 percent) and Unjha (9.88 percent) in Mehsana, Khambhat (4.83 percent), Sojitra (8.61 percent), and Tarapur (9.65 percent) in Anand, Jetpur Pavi (9 percent) in Chhota Udepur, Godhra (9.35 percent) in Panchmahal, Lunawada (9.24 percent) in Mahisagar district, Devgadbharia (8.07 percent), Fatepura (9.65 percent), Garbada (9.8 percent), Limkheda (8.82 percent) in Dahod district, Savli (6.62 percent) in Vadodara, Lakhtar (7.91 percent), Limbdi (7.5 percent), Muli (7.2 percent), Thangadh (9.94 percent), and Maliya Maliya (6.72 percent) in Morbi district.
For the week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for July 9 in the districts of Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad.
