Mumbai hit by heavy rainfall again; two dead after trees fall

Many western suburbs of Mumbai saw waterlogging before the problem relaxed in the evening; the Andheri subway closed again.

With heavy rainfall pounding Mumbai, chaos occurred once again. Two people died in a tree, and a branch collapsed at Malad and Goregaon. Many low-lying regions were waterlogged, and BEST buses had to divert their ways. Traffic on important road links is restricted.

But as the showers reduced in the evening, life returned to normal in many areas.

As the precipitation wreaked devastation across the city and suburbs, one person passed away in Malad West after a peepal tree collapsed at midnight. Kiran Dighavkar, the assistant commissioner of P North control, said the incident took place in Manibhai Chawl in Mamlatdar Wadi.

The tree was on personal premises. Kaushal Doshi, 38, was seriously wounded and went to Dr Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali West, where he was pronounced dead.

Doshi went to the public restroom at midnight and didn’t come back. In the morning, his family began looking for him and saw him under the tree.

On Wednesday at about 3.30 pm, a tree branch collapsed on a home in the old BMC colony, at Mithanagar, about Datta Mandir, Goregaon West, hurting one person. Primal Nirmal, 30, was pronounced dead by the doctors at a nearby hospital.

The BMC got 48 complaints of trees/big branches collapsing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stones and soil falling protests were obtained from two areas in the eastern suburbs. As a safety bar, 20 to 25 homes were evacuated at Surya Nagar, Vikhroli West.

The subway at Andheri was shut for vehicles around 1 pm on Wednesday after it was doused in rainwater. Though the BMC has established a high-capacity pumping system at the subway, it proved inadequate during heavy rainfall. The subway was opened again within an hour.
