Opposition Demands Clarity on US-India Trade Deal Details

Congress leaders have intensified their scrutiny of the recently announced US-India trade agreement, demanding full transparency from the government. The deal, announced following a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, has sparked significant debate in Parliament and beyond.

PM Under ‘Extreme Pressure,’ Says Rahul Gandhi

Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi leveled serious allegations against Prime Minister Modi, claiming he is “compromised” and acting under extreme pressure. Gandhi stated that the trade deal, which remained stalled for months, was hastily signed without proper scrutiny. He raised concerns about parliamentary conventions, noting that the Leader of Opposition was not permitted to speak on the President’s address—an unprecedented move.

Gandhi further linked the government’s actions to international pressures, referencing the Adani case in the United States and leaked Epstein Files as potential leverage points against the Prime Minister.

Government Must Explain Terms to Parliament

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor echoed concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the agreement. He emphasized that substantial claims made by US President Trump—including India’s commitment to purchase over $500 billion worth of American goods and open its agricultural markets—remain unconfirmed by the Indian government.

Tharoor called for immediate parliamentary briefing and detailed explanation of the deal’s implications, particularly regarding impacts on Indian farmers. While acknowledging that trade agreements and tariff reductions are important, he stressed that transparency is essential before celebrating any development.

Prime Minister Modi defended the agreement as a “wonderful announcement,” but opposition parties continue demanding detailed disclosure of all agreed-upon terms and their potential consequences for India’s economy and agricultural sector.
