Umpire’s Controversial Call Hands Pakistan Narrow Win Over Sri Lanka

Pakistan survived a dramatic scare to defeat Sri Lanka by five runs in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight encounter at Pallekele on Saturday. What seemed like a comfortable victory quickly turned into a heart-stopping finish, with the match ultimately decided by a single controversial delivery.

Sri Lanka needed 28 runs off the final over, bowled by Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi. Their captain, Dasun Shanaka, produced a breathtaking display, smashing a four followed by three consecutive sixes. The Pallekele crowd was on its feet as Sri Lanka crept closer to a near-impossible target.

The Final Ball That Sparked Outrage

With the match hanging by a thread, Shaheen bowled a wide yorker on the last delivery. Shanaka, believing the ball had drifted well outside off stump, chose to leave it — and many watching agreed with his instinct. However, the on-field umpire ruled it a legal delivery, sealing Pakistan’s victory and igniting immediate backlash across social media. Fans flooded platforms with criticism, insisting the ball was clearly a wide and that the umpire’s decision had directly cost Sri Lanka the match.

Shanaka’s Honest Reflection

Speaking after the game, a gracious Shanaka acknowledged how close Sri Lanka had come. “It was that close of a game where I could have finished it. But yeah, unfortunate. Well bowled to Shaheen,” he said. He also apologised to Sri Lankan fans, citing injuries to key bowlers as a major reason behind the team’s difficult campaign, admitting their absence hurt both the squad’s strength and its collective confidence.

Despite the defeat, Sri Lanka had already been eliminated from semi-final contention before this match was played.
