Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a heartfelt letter to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is scheduled to return to Earth on Wednesday after a nine-month mission at the International Space Station. The letter, dated March 1, was sent through former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino and shared by Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on social media platform X.
In the letter, Modi expressed his admiration for Williams, noting that despite the vast distance separating them, she continues to be close to the hearts of the people of India. “Though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts. The entire nation is praying for your health and the success of your mission,” the Prime Minister wrote. He further conveyed his excitement for Williams’ return, stating, “After your return, we eagerly look forward to hosting you in India. It would be a true honor to welcome one of our nation’s most illustrious daughters.”
Modi also reflected on his past encounters with Williams, recalling their meeting during his 2016 visit to the United States. He expressed his deep respect for her achievements, acknowledging the pride that 1.4 billion Indians feel for her accomplishments in space exploration. He highlighted her exemplary strength and perseverance, especially in the face of recent challenges, which continue to inspire people across the world.
The Prime Minister also mentioned Williams’ late father, Deepak Pandya, and her mother, Bonnie Pandya. Modi recalled meeting both of them during his visit to the US and shared his belief that Williams’ father’s blessings continue to guide her. He empathized with the excitement of her mother, who must be eagerly awaiting her return.
