BJP Leader Prem Kumar Unanimously Elected Bihar Speaker

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Prem Kumar was unanimously elected Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly through a voice vote on Tuesday, marking a significant strengthening of BJP’s administrative control in the state. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Opposition Leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav jointly escorted the 70-year-old nine-term MLA to the Speaker’s chair, maintaining democratic tradition.

A Veteran Legislator Takes the Helm

Dr. Prem Kumar, who has served as MLA from Gayaji since 1990, brings extensive experience to the role as the 18th Speaker of Bihar Vidhan Sabha. His unanimous election marks the first time since 2015 that a Speaker has been elected without opposition challenge. Pro-totem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav confirmed receiving four proposals, all nominating Prem Kumar, with the first backed by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

Prem Kumar Commits to Inclusive Leadership

Upon assuming office, Prem Kumar pledged equal respect for Treasury and Opposition benches, emphasizing meaningful debate and legislative excellence. “The beauty of democracy is that people with diverse thinking sit across the table for a common cause,” he stated, committing to transparent, rules-based governance.

The election strengthens BJP’s position as the single-largest party in Bihar’s ruling coalition, complementing the party’s recent acquisition of the key Home Department portfolio. The deputy Speaker election, scheduled for December 4, is expected to go to coalition partner JD-U, maintaining balance within the government structure.
