Protesting Wrestlers appeal’s for candlelight march today

Protesting wrestlers in Delhi have planned for a candlelight march from Jantar Mantar to India Gate this evening in response to allegations of sexual assault by national federation leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. 

The second phase of the protest, led by three of the country’s top wrestlers, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Mallik, is one month old today.

The wrestlers marched from Jantar Mantar to the city’s Bangla Sahib Gurudwara on May 19.

Punia, an Olympic medallist, tweeted a video clip inviting sympathetic members of the public to join the march in solidarity. “Those who are unable to participate physically should light candles in their homes at 5 p.m. and share videos on social media to show their support.”

The deadline set by wrestlers for Brij Bhushan Singh’s arrest expired on Sunday.

This comes after they warned of a’mahahapanchayat’ outside the new Parliament building next week, on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open it.

Earlier today, students and faculty from Jawaharlal Nehru University marched to support the wrestlers, and Malik joined them. According to Aishe Ghosh, President of the JNU Students’ Union, “… hundreds of students and teachers joined the solidarity gathering…”
