Cameron Green deservedly received the Player of the Match trophy for his unbeaten 64 off 40 balls, Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun received high praise for bowling a good last over under pressure, Riley Meredith, as well as Jason Beherendroff, were lauded for their spells, but Tilak Varma’s contribution somehow slipped to the backstage.
Tilak Varma’s performance in the presence of his home crowd but not for his own team. On Tuesday, he was representing Mumbai Indians against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad in an IPL 2023 match.
The left-hander, who has been a rock in MI’s middle order since last year’s IPL, delivered other key innings for his team.
MI were 95 for 3 after 11.5 overs when Suryakumar Yadav was bowled. They wanted someone who could bat with Green at a reasonable tempo. Tilak did that when he batted at No. 5.
He gave the MI innings a much-needed boost in the middle overs. The left-hander smashed 37 off 17 balls, hitting four sixes and two fours. MI finished with 192/5, which was 14 more than SRH might manage.
MI captain Rohit Sharma admired the 20-year-old after the team’s victory. The MI opener hinted towards recruiting Tilak into the Indian team. “We saw Tilak last season.” We all know what he can do with the bat, and he has been outstanding this season.
I admire his approach. He is not fearful and does not play the bowler but rather the ball. He’s got a long way to go for someone his age, coming out and playing the way he is, and we’ll see him play for some different teams,” added the India and MI captain with a cheeky smirk.
Tilak, who is only in his second IPL season, has already shown to be a vital element of the MI batting team. MI lost Krunal and Hardik Pandya last season, and Kieron Pollard departed before the start of this season, but Tilak has done everything he can to keep the five-time champions from feeling the strain.
Since his debut in the IPL last year, he has scored the most in the middle overs. Tom Moody, a former Australian cricketer, concurred with Rohit.
“Isn’t he a real jet? “I enjoy watching him bat,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo. “He appears to have a head on his shoulders well above his age, a sense of maturity about navigating his innings, he never seems flustered, he’s got the shots.”
“If he needs to pull the trigger and make a couple of big shots, he can do it comfortably.” It’s an understatement, but he has a promising career ahead of him, right? Not just for Mumbai Indians, but for India as a whole.”
