Sanju Samson Accepts Middle-Order Role After Losing T20I Opening Slot

Sanju Samson has gracefully accepted his demotion from India’s T20I opening slot, which was taken over by Shubman Gill following the Asia Cup 2025. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, who had delivered consistently at the top of the order with three centuries in a single year, remains committed to the team’s strategic needs. Samson emphasized his flexibility and readiness to adapt to any batting position, highlighting the team’s focus on having adaptable players beyond fixed opening spots.

Samson’s Flexibility Philosophy

Speaking to broadcasters ahead of the T20I series against Australia in Canberra, Samson reflected on his varied roles throughout his career. “I have played a lot of different roles for a lot of different teams,” he stated. “I have been part of this team for a long time now and have done different roles. I have opened the batting. I have finished matches. Now, I am batting in the middle order. Only the openers are fixed in this team. The rest of the batters have to be ready to bat at any time and in any situation.”

Australia Series Update

In the opening T20I against Australia in Canberra, India’s new opening combination of Gill and Abhishek Sharma continued their partnership. Abhishek contributed 19 runs before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis. However, Captain Suryakumar Yadav showcased brilliant form with an unbeaten 39 off 24 balls, while Gill added an aggressive 37 off 20 balls, building a 62-run partnership. India reached 78/1 in 9.4 overs before persistent rainfall forced the match’s abandonment. Samson’s maturity in accepting the role change demonstrates India’s team-first approach under Gambhir’s captaincy.
