Shreyas Iyer Discharged from ICU, Recovery Progresses in Sydney

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Sydney hospital, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey. The 30-year-old’s condition has improved substantially following the serious injury he sustained during the third ODI against Australia, with his overall condition now described as “delicate but stable.” The BCCI has continued its round-the-clock monitoring, ensuring the cricketer receives comprehensive medical care during this crucial phase of his rehabilitation.

Medical Progress Shows Encouraging Signs

Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The incident occurred when Iyer took a brilliant running catch near third man to dismiss Alex Carey, but landed awkwardly, sustaining a rib cage injury that led to immediate hospitalization. Scans subsequently revealed a laceration to his spleen, prompting intensive medical intervention.

The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, has confirmed that the Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress. This dedicated medical support reflects the seriousness of his condition and the board’s commitment to ensuring a complete recovery.

Support System and Timeline

Friends and family have rallied around the cricketer during his recovery phase in Sydney. The presence of his support network has provided emotional strength during this challenging period. Initially, Iyer was expected to be out of action for about three weeks, but the recovery period could now be longer due to the internal bleeding detected. While an exact timeline remains uncertain, medical experts remain optimistic about his overall progress following the move out of intensive care.

The 31-year-old faces an uncertain return to competitive cricket, with the upcoming ODI series against South Africa scheduled to commence on November 30 now appearing unlikely for his participation.
