Abhishek Sharma walks out wearing Mohammed Siraj’s jersey as duck streak continues

Abhishek Sharma created an unusual spectacle during India’s 2026 T20 World Cup clash against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The star Indian opener walked out to bat wearing Mohammed Siraj’s No. 73 jersey instead of his own kit, leaving fans and commentators surprised.

The incident occurred after Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and chose to bat first in India’s final group stage match. As Abhishek walked out to open the batting with Ishan Kishan, viewers immediately noticed he was not wearing his customary jersey.

The Reason Behind the Jersey Swap

Cricket experts Nasser Hussain and Sunil Gavaskar explained on-air that Abhishek had simply forgotten his kit at the hotel. Some ground reports suggested that his jersey was actually in the dressing room, but no one could bring it to the stadium in time before the innings began.

The Unfortunate Duck Streak Continues

Unfortunately for Abhishek, changing jerseys did not change his fortunes at the crease. The 25-year-old was dismissed for a duck after facing just three balls, with Aryan Dutta taking his wicket. This marked his third consecutive duck in the tournament, having also failed to open his account against the USA and Pakistan.

Historic Low Performance

The Indian opener became only the third player in T20 World Cup history to record three consecutive ducks, joining West Indies’ Andre Fletcher and Uganda’s Roger Musaka. He also became the second Indian after Mohammed Siraj to achieve this unfortunate record. Despite being the World No. 1 batter, Abhishek is yet to score a run in his debut ICC tournament appearance.
