Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Day 1: Aamir Khan Shines in Strong Comeback with Rs 11.7 Crore Opening
Aamir Khan made a confident return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, which opened to a solid Rs 11.7 crore on its first day at the domestic box office. Released on June 20, the RS Prasanna directorial marks a spiritual sequel to the beloved 2007 drama Taare Zameen Par, and early signs suggest it could build on that emotional legacy.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk.com, Sitaare Zameen Par matched the Day 1 numbers of Aamir’s 2022 release Laal Singh Chaddha, which had also earned Rs 11.7 crore on opening day. However, Laal Singh Chaddha fizzled out quickly, ending its theatrical run with just Rs 60 crore. The new release appears better positioned for sustained success, thanks to favourable reviews and stronger word-of-mouth.
Compared to Taare Zameen Par, which had opened to Rs 2 crore back in 2007, Sitaare Zameen Par has clearly benefited from Aamir’s continued fanbase, brand value, and a more commercial appeal. The film reportedly registered a 21.43% occupancy rate across the Hindi belt, with peak viewership during evening and night shows. These numbers indicate the potential for a significant weekend surge.
Critics have largely appreciated the film’s emotional simplicity and humour. India Today rated it 3.5 stars, noting, “The beauty of Sitaare Zameen Par lies in the fact that it isn’t trying to be anything it’s not… not a flawless portrayal of emotion, but a story with its heart in the right place.”
The film stars Aamir Khan in a warm and uplifting role as a basketball coach guiding a group of young players. Genelia Deshmukh plays the female lead, while a cast of ten child actors adds energy and freshness to the narrative. The soundtrack, composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, has also received a positive response, especially among younger audiences.
Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film blends themes of teamwork, inclusion, and resilience — echoing the emotional tone that made Taare Zameen Par a cult classic. While Sitaare Zameen Par doesn’t aim for deep metaphor or layered social commentary, its accessible storytelling and feel-good factor appear to be resonating with audiences.
With the weekend around the corner, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Sitaare Zameen Par turns a strong start into a box office hit. Given the early traction, industry watchers remain optimistic that Aamir Khan may be on his way to a successful comeback after a few years of mixed results.
