When a winter storm dumped a lot of snow, had strong gusts, and even brought thunder and lightning into southern Ontario, the City of Toronto declared a “major snowstorm condition” on Saturday to give officials additional power to clear snow off important routes.

As of 6 a.m. on Saturday, Environment Canada reported that the Greater Toronto Area had received between 22 and 30 centimetres of snow.

The federal weather agency cancelled the provincial winter storm and snowfall warnings throughout the day.

According to Environment Canada climatologist Dave Phillips, the area had a rare “thundersnow” incidence, which occurs when thunder and lightning strike during a snowfall.

Phillips claims that the phenomenon happens only once a year in southern Ontario, usually near the start or end of winter.

“The atmosphere is charged with moisture and a lot of dynamics. The air is rising and cooling as it rises, and a lot is going on inside those clouds, including thunder and lightning. “Phillips stated this in an interview with the CBC News Network.

“Lightning is frequently seen within clouds… It’s quite spectacular and frequently comes with a lot of snow.”

Due to the weather, dozens of flights into and also out of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport were cancelled or postponed late Friday and early Saturday morning, with airlines advising customers to check flight status before departing for airports in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.
