Uganda’s off-duty police constable kills money lender; read why

An off-duty police policeman in Uganda’s capital city of Kampala shot and killed a 39-year-old Indian money lender with a stolen AK-47 assault weapon over a 2.1 million shillings (Rs 46,000) debt.

According to media accounts, 30-year-old Ivan Wabwire opened fire on Uttam Bhandari on May 12. He’s been arrested.

The event was captured on CCTV installed in the room where the accused shot and killed the victim. A terrifying video of the incident has gone popular on social media.

According to news agency PTI, the footage showed Wabwire firing multiple shots at Bhandari from close range.

Bhandari was the director of TFS finance services, according to the police, and Wabwire was his customer.

The 2 disagreed about how much the constable owed the firm. When Wabwire was informed of the loan amount (2.1 million shillings) on May 12, he allegedly began disputing with Bhandari, claiming that the figure was inflated, according to a media report.

According to Patrick Onyango, a spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, Wabwire abandoned his AK-47 gun and ran after shooting Bhandari.

The crime scene yielded 13 cartridges, according to police.

According to authorities, Wabwire has a history of mental disorders and was forbidden from carrying a firearm 5 years ago after being admitted to a hospital twice for mental breakdowns.

Wabwire is now detained at the Busia police station in eastern Uganda. He allegedly stole the gun from a fellow police officer and flatmate.

Meanwhile, Uganda’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, visited with the Indian community and assured them of their safety, according to the news portal Nile Post.
