Virat Kohli Returns to Domestic Cricket for ODI World Cup 2027

Virat Kohli has made a significant announcement by agreeing to return to domestic cricket, signaling his clear intention to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The star batter has informed the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) of his availability for India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Kohli’s Path to World Cup Selection

This development comes following the BCCI’s directive that players must participate in domestic cricket to be considered for national team selection. Kohli’s decision puts to rest speculation about his ODI future, especially after he recently achieved a historic milestone by scoring his 52nd ODI century during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing world record. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had previously expressed uncertainty about Kohli’s selection for the mega event, but the batter has now clearly conveyed his commitment to the competition.

Internal Team Tensions Reported

Recent reports indicate underlying tensions within the Indian cricket team. According to sources, Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir have not been on speaking terms since the Australia tour in October. Additionally, communication gaps exist between chief selector Agarkar and former ODI captain Rohit Sharma, who was removed from captaincy before the Australian tour.

The atmosphere surrounding India’s ODI team remains strained following poor Test performance, with the team losing five of their last seven home matches. Despite these challenges, Kohli’s confirmation to play domestic cricket demonstrates his commitment to both personal form and national duty. Rohit Sharma has also agreed to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai, suggesting both senior players are preparing for the crucial 2027 World Cup campaign.
