Weather Forecast and Impact of Unseasonal Rain in Gujarat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain and thundershowers in Gujarat until Thursday, May 16. The forecast includes several areas that are expected to experience weather disturbances.

Affected Areas Due to Rain in Gujarat:

The districts likely to see rain and thundershowers are:

  • Banaskantha
  • Sabarkantha
  • Mehsana
  • Gandhinagar
  • Aravalli
  • Kheda
  • Ahmedabad
  • Anand
  • Panchmahal
  • Dahod
  • Narmada
  • Bharuch
  • Mahisagar

Specific Weather Events:

Thundershowers are expected in Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, and Panchmahal on May 15. Further rain is expected on May 16 in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Dahod, Gir Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar.

Casualties and Damage Due to Rain in Gujarat:

Two people died in rain-related incidents on Monday. The unseasonal rainfall, accompanied by severe winds, caused significant disruption:

  • Power supply was interrupted in 249 villages.
  • Trees were uprooted.
  • Crops were damaged.

Garudeshwar in the Narmada region recorded the highest rainfall. In Junagadh, strong winds uprooted trees and led to power outages.

Emergency Response:

The state’s disaster management teams have been mobilized to address the crisis. The administration has instructed various departments to stay active, including:

  • Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (PGVCL)
  • Roads and Building Department
  • Police
  • Forest Department

Government Action:

Following the damage in various districts, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened an emergency meeting on Monday evening. Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey provided an overview of the conditions, reporting rainfall measurements ranging from 2 to 38 millimeters across 41 talukas.

Chief Minister Patel has urged the state’s Acting Chief Secretary to ensure the readiness of the State Emergency Operation Centre and District Control Rooms to prevent further casualties and minimize property damage.

Concerns for Farmers:

The unseasonal rains have raised concerns among farmers, particularly about the potential damage to the cashew and mango crops in areas like Una in Gir Somnath. To address these concerns, the Chief Minister has ordered an assessment of the agricultural damage.
