AB de Villiers Backs Rohit Sharma: No Reason to Retire

South African batting legend AB de Villiers has expressed that Rohit Sharma has no reason to retire, praising the Indian captain for his outstanding performance and leadership. De Villiers believes that Rohit could go down as one of the greatest ODI captains in history, especially after his recent triumphs with India.

Speculation had been swirling about Rohit’s potential retirement from ODIs after the Champions Trophy, but the 37-year-old silenced these rumors by leading India to an unprecedented third title in the tournament. De Villiers highlighted Rohit’s impressive win percentage of nearly 74%, which he noted is significantly higher than that of any other past captain.

“If he keeps going, he will certainly go down as one of the best ODI captains of all time,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel. Rohit himself has dismissed retirement rumors, stressing that he has no plans to step down.

Rohit’s pivotal role in India’s Champions Trophy final against New Zealand was another key point of admiration from de Villiers. Rohit scored a crucial 76 runs off 83 balls, anchoring India’s chase of 252 in Dubai and leading his team to victory. “Why would he retire with a record like that? Not just as a captain but also as a batter,” de Villiers remarked, applauding Rohit’s leadership and ability to perform under pressure.

De Villiers also lauded Rohit’s transformation as a batter over the last few years, particularly his successes in both the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, won within a span of just nine months. “Rohit Sharma has no reason to retire. His record speaks for itself, and he has transformed his game in remarkable ways,” de Villiers concluded.
