Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Phase 2: Final Stretch to Open on January 12

Inauguration by Prime Minister

Commuters in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are set to benefit from a major boost in public transport connectivity, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the final route of the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Rail service on January 12, 2026. The new stretch will connect Sachivalaya (Secretariat) and Mahatma Mandir, marking the completion of Phase 2 of the metro project.

As part of the programme, the Prime Minister is likely to travel by metro from the Old High Court station in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, before attending a scheduled event with a German delegation.

New Stations and Route Details

The extended corridor introduces five new stations: Akshardham, Old Secretariat, Sector-16, Sector-24, and Mahatma Mandir. Spanning 5.36 kilometres, the route will improve access to key destinations such as the Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir.

Trial runs on the stretch began last October during Vijayadashami and have since been successfully completed. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has granted approvals after detailed inspections of safety systems and passenger facilities.

Broader Network Expansion

Developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network will now cover 68 kilometres across 54 stations. The expansion aims to provide faster, affordable, and eco-friendly transport for thousands of commuters daily.

The new route is expected to directly benefit residents of nearly 20 sectors of Gandhinagar and three surrounding villages. It will also ease travel for employees working in around 60 government offices located in the Secretariat complex and Sector-16.

Preparations for Launch

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, the district administration is holding coordination meetings with officials and representatives. Arrangements for station decoration, crowd management, and security are being finalised. Authorities believe the metro will reduce reliance on private vehicles, easing traffic congestion and enhancing urban mobility in Gandhinagar.
