Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Issues Red Alert

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued a red alert due to the prevailing heatwave conditions in the city. Residents have been cautioned that temperatures will hover around 45 degrees Celsius until May 24.

AMC Health Department Measures:

The AMC health department has implemented several measures to address the heatwave. Urban health centers must remain open until 7 pm to provide necessary services.

In addition, all municipal parks will extend their hours, remaining open from 6 am to 11 pm until further notice. The AMC also relocates homeless individuals to shelter homes managed by the Urban Community Development Department.

Public Awareness and Safety Measures by AMC:

To ensure public awareness, the AMC has contacted over 300,000 residents via WhatsApp, alerting them about the heatwave. Announcements are also being made through loudspeakers in densely populated areas such as slums and labor colonies.

The AMC has adjusted work schedules and conditions to protect workers from the extreme heat. The afternoon shift for sanitation workers has been pushed back to 3-4:30 pm.

Builders have been directed to halt work between 12 and 4 pm, and industrial associations have been instructed to provide water and buttermilk to their workers.

Heat-Related Cases and Data:

From May 1 to 19, the Municipal Corporation reported 4,710 heat-related cases through the 108 emergency services.

The severity of the heatwave is underscored by temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of Gujarat. Surendranagar recorded the highest temperature in the state this year on Sunday, at 45.3 degrees Celsius.
