Ahmedabad Heatwave: A Model for Heatwave Preparedness

Over a decade ago, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, faced a devastating heatwave that resulted in numerous fatalities. In response to this crisis, the Government implemented the country’s first Heat Action Plan (HAP) to safeguard the city from extreme heat events.

Today, as cities across the globe grapple with the increasing threat of heatwaves, Ahmedabad’s HAP serves as a beacon of effective heatwave preparedness and response.

Establishment of Heat Wards and Medical Prioritization for Ahmedabad Heatwave:

One key aspect of Ahmedabad’s HAP was the creation of specialized heat wards in hospitals. These wards were designed to prioritize the treatment of individuals suffering from heatstroke, heat-related rashes, or exhaustion.

By dedicating resources and medical attention to those most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, the city aimed to mitigate the effect of excessive heat on public health.

Effective Communication and Outreach Strategies:

Recognizing the importance of timely warnings and information dissemination, city authorities in Ahmedabad utilized various communication channels to alert residents about impending heatwaves.

While SMS and WhatsApp alerts were employed, authorities also leveraged press releases, billboard messages, and radio broadcasts to reach a wider audience.

Moreover, efforts were made to engage with illiterate and marginalized communities through health workers, community leaders, and local radio hosts, ensuring that crucial heat-related information reached all population segments.

Innovative Solutions for Ahmedabad Heatwave Mitigation:

Ahmedabad implemented innovative solutions to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, particularly in vulnerable and rural areas. One such initiative involved coating roofs of homes with white paint to reflect sunlight and reduce indoor temperatures.

This simple yet effective measure helped keep indoor spaces cooler, relieving residents during heatwaves. Additionally, the development of ‘ModRoofs,’ constructed from coconut husk and paper waste, offered an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional roofing materials, further enhancing heat resilience in the community.

Community Engagement and Support Programs:

Ahmedabad’s HAP incorporated community engagement and support programs to ensure the widespread adoption of heat mitigation strategies.

Water sprinklers installed at traffic signals relieved commuters during scorching temperatures, while buttermilk distribution programs helped hydrate and cool residents.

By fostering community participation and providing tangible support, the city fostered resilience and solidarity in the face of extreme heat events.
