Kohli, Rohit Return in India’s ODI Squad for New Zealand

After winning the T20I series 3-2, India now turn to a five-match ODI series against New Zealand. The selectors have named a 19-member squad that includes the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The one-day matches will be played in New Zealand from November 4 to 15.

Eight players from the T20I squad will fly back home, as they have not been picked for the one-dayers. Shreyas Iyer, who led the side in the 20-over format, stays on. Of the 19 players selected, 12 are available for all five matches, giving the team a settled core across the series.

Captaincy Shared Between Gill and Iyer

Shubman Gill, India’s full-time captain in ODIs and Tests, will lead the side in the first three matches. Iyer will take charge for the last two games in Gill’s absence. It will be his ODI captaincy debut. He has so far captained India in 26 T20Is but has not yet led the team in a one-day international.

Players Picked for Specific Matches

The squad has been built around rotation. Gill, KL Rahul and Anshul Kamboj are part of the group only for the first three ODIs. Tilak Varma, Kumar Kushagra and Yash Thakur have been picked for the final two matches. Nitish Kumar Reddy is included for the first ODI alone.

The staggered selections suggest a careful approach to workload management over a series packed into just twelve days. Rotating players should also give the team management a chance to look at a wider pool of talent.

With experienced names back in the fold and a first-time ODI captain set to lead in the second half, the series offers India a mix of stability and experimentation. All eyes will be on how Kohli and Rohit perform in the one-day format.
