Bengaluru Couple Makes History: First to Swim Sri Lanka to India Together

Bengaluru-based couple Danish Abdi and Vrushali Prasade have etched their names in history by becoming the first pair to complete a side-by-side open-water swim from Sri Lanka to India. Covering nearly 32 kilometres across the Palk Strait along the historic Ram Setu route, the duo began their swim from Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, at 4:30 am on May 7 and reached Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu, at approximately 3:15 pm — completing the gruelling crossing in 10 hours and 45 minutes.

Four Years in the Making

What makes this feat even more remarkable is that the couple began learning to swim only four years ago. Their journey to this milestone was built on rigorous training, mutual encouragement, and expert guidance from their coaches. “This swim was all heart — it was each other’s company that gave us the emotional and mental strength to keep going,” the couple shared on Instagram after the achievement. The post quickly drew thousands of congratulatory messages from admirers across the country.

Safety and Support Ensured Throughout

The swim was conducted under strict supervision. Support boats, paramedics, and personnel from the Indian Coast Guard accompanied Danish and Vrushali throughout the crossing, ensuring their safety across every kilometre of open water.

Their triumphant Instagram post — “We did it! Sri Lanka to India. 10 hrs 45 mins.” — captured a moment of sheer joy and disbelief. The couple’s story stands as a powerful reminder that with determination, teamwork, and the right preparation, even the most daunting challenges can be conquered.
