Apple is reportedly working on a high-end addition to its smart home lineup that could significantly expand the capabilities of its recently introduced HomeView platform. While the first-generation HomeView has yet to reach consumers, reports suggest the company is already developing a more advanced model, expected to be called the HomeView Ultra.

The upcoming device is said to feature a larger 9-inch display supported by a motorized robotic arm, allowing the screen to move and reposition itself automatically. Unlike conventional smart displays that remain stationary, the HomeView Ultra is reportedly designed to interact actively with its environment. Industry sources indicate that its appearance may resemble Pixar’s iconic desk lamp, blending functionality with a distinctive design.

The project reportedly began in 2019 under the internal codename J595. Initially, Apple reportedly focused on improving video communication experiences. As artificial intelligence became a greater priority for the company, the concept evolved into a broader smart home product designed to understand and react to its surroundings.

One standout feature under development is said to be user tracking. By utilizing cameras and advanced sensors, the device could follow a person’s movements within a room and adjust the display position accordingly. This capability may prove particularly useful during video calls, ensuring users remain visible on screen without needing to reposition themselves manually.

Beyond communication, Apple is reportedly exploring ways to make the HomeView Ultra a more intelligent home assistant. The device may be able to recognize activity in a room and automatically trigger connected smart home functions. For example, it could switch on lights when someone enters a space or respond to environmental changes without requiring voice commands.

Reports also suggest Apple is investing heavily in obstacle-detection technology for the robotic arm. This would enable the display to navigate movement safely, avoiding furniture, walls, and other objects while adjusting its position. Such functionality could help deliver a more seamless and practical user experience.

Although hardware development is believed to be largely complete, Apple continues to refine the software that will power the product’s artificial intelligence features. The company is reportedly focused on ensuring the device can understand context and respond intelligently in different situations.

The HomeView Ultra is expected to cost around $1,000, positioning it as a premium smart home offering. While a launch could happen as early as next year, industry observers note the timeline may still shift as Apple continues developing the ambitious project.
