The newly elected Texas attorney general once composed music for Dragon Ball Z, blending creativity, law, and public service in an unconventional career.
Nathan Johnson’s victory in the Texas attorney general election has not only reshaped the state’s political landscape but also brought renewed attention to an unexpected chapter in his past. Before making a name for himself in law and politics, Johnson worked in the entertainment industry, contributing music to one of the world’s most recognisable anime franchises, Dragon Ball Z.
The Democrat secured a historic win over Republican rival Mayes Middleton, becoming the first member of his party to hold the Texas attorney general’s office in nearly three decades. While his political achievement has drawn widespread attention, many voters have been intrigued by his lesser-known background as a composer.
In a recent public discussion, Johnson reflected on his work in the early 2000s, composing musical scores for Dragon Ball Z. He said he composed music for 67 episodes of the popular anime series, along with five related films. He added that the experience gave him a rare chance to combine creativity with professional work.
Johnson recalled fond memories of working on action-packed scenes and dramatic moments while spending time with his young son. He described how his child would watch episodes unfold from his lap, recognise beloved characters, and become fascinated by the animated adventures. For Johnson, those moments became some of the most cherished from that period of his life.
Although his involvement with the franchise lasted only part of his career, he says the connection still resonates with fans today. Beyond providing a creative outlet, the experience gave him a unique cultural connection that few public officials possess. He joked that his work on the series earned him instant credibility among his children’s friends and among anime enthusiasts alike.
After his time in music, Johnson focused on building a legal career. A physics graduate of the University of Arizona, he later earned a law degree from the University of Texas and established himself as a respected attorney. He entered politics in 2018, winning a seat in the Texas State Senate to represent the Dallas area.
Now preparing to serve as Texas attorney general, Johnson has emphasised his commitment to upholding the law and representing all Texans’ interests. Describing the election result as both a privilege and a responsibility, he has pledged to serve with dedication and integrity.
His journey from composing anime soundtracks to winning a statewide office stands as one of the most unusual and compelling political stories in recent Texas history.
