Google has announced a major update to its Fitbit ecosystem, promising nearly twice the accuracy in automatic workout detection and introducing new health-tracking features to simplify everyday fitness management. The changes, rolling out across Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch models, aim to reduce missed workouts and provide users with deeper insights into long-term health trends.

One of the biggest improvements is the expanded automatic activity detection. Previously limited to 10 activity types, the system can now recognise over 100, ranging from swimming and strength training to racket and team sports. Workouts are logged automatically once they last at least 15 minutes and show a sustained rise in heart rate. This enhancement means users no longer need to manually start tracking sessions, cutting missed workouts by more than half. Importantly, the system learns from user corrections and gradually adapts to individual exercise patterns, improving prediction reliability.

Beyond workout tracking, Google is introducing Health Guardian, a new suite of tools available to Fitbit Air users with a Google Health Premium subscription. Health Guardian generates monthly metabolic health reports that highlight trends in areas such as blood pressure and insulin resistance. These reports help users spot subtle changes in their wellbeing and consider lifestyle adjustments. The integrated Google Health Coach can then use these insights to provide personalised guidance, offering context that goes beyond single data points. However, Google stresses that Health Guardian is not a medical diagnostic tool and should not replace professional healthcare advice.

The Google Health app has also received more than 55 updates, including expanded customisation options, easier meal logging via photos or voice input, and improved memory within the Health Coach. Google has broadened integration with Apple Health, allowing users to consolidate more health data across platforms.

For everyday users, these updates translate into less friction during workouts, more accurate records, and a clearer picture of long-term health. While the accuracy claims are based on Google’s internal testing and may vary in real-world use, the combination of smarter detection and monthly health insights marks a meaningful step towards making fitness tracking more intuitive and actionable.

In essence, Google’s Fitbit upgrade reduces the effort required to maintain consistent exercise tracking while providing richer context for wellness decisions- helping users focus less on their devices and more on their health.
