Ahmedabad University to spearhead Wadhwan City Bird Atlas 2026.

In a meaningful and significant step toward biodiversity conservation and citizen-driven environmental research, the Wadhwan City Bird Atlas (WCBA) 2026 is set to be officially launched on June 11, 2026, in Wadhwan City, Gujarat. This initiative aims to encourage active participation from local communities in documenting and preserving avian diversity. The programme has been organised by Ahmedabad University, and is built around the theme “Citizen Science for Nature, Knowledge for Conservation.” This has highlighted a growing role of public participation in scientific research and environmental stewardship.

For creating public awareness about conservation and collecting ecological data across the world, citizen science projects today have become powerful tools. The Wadhwan City Bird Atlas seeks to adopt a similar approach by involving bird enthusiasts, students, researchers, and local residents in systematically recording bird species found across the city and surrounding landscapes. The inaugural session and protocol orientation programme will serve as the foundation for the project, introducing participants to survey methodologies, data collection standards, and the overall vision behind the atlas. Organisers, by engaging citizens directly in biodiversity monitoring, are hoping to generate valuable scientific data while fostering a deeper appreciation for local ecosystems.

The Wadhwan City Bird Atlas is expected to contribute to a growing body of ecological knowledge about the region, which is home to diverse habitats supporting a variety of bird species. Accurate data gathered through citizen participation can help authorities better understand ecological changes and respond effectively to emerging conservation challenges. The project also envisions to bridge the gap between academic research and public involvement by making conservation a shared responsibility.

The launch event will be attended by several prominent leaders and conservation advocates. Shri Arjunbhai Modhwadia, Honorable Cabinet Minister for Forests & Environment, Climate Change, and Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, will be gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. Joining him as the Guest of Honour will be Shri Jagdishbhai Makwana, MLA of the Wadhwan Constituency and Deputy Chief Whip of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The programme will also feature the presence of Shri Bhavanisinhji Mori, former Member of the State Board for Wildlife, Government of Gujarat, and former Wildlife Warden of Surendranagar District, whose extensive experience in wildlife conservation is expected to add valuable insights to the initiative.

Organisers see the Wadhwan City Bird Atlas as a long-term platform that can connect science, education, and community action. The programme has been organised under the leadership of Ahmedabad University with coordination by Devratsinh Mori and Dr Jitesh Jhawar. The Wadhwan City Bird Atlas 2026, with the participation of citizens, researchers, and policymakers alike, has the potential to become an important milestone in Gujarat’s conservation landscape.
