Amish Devgan gets SC’s extension of protection from arrest.

Multiple FIRs were filed against journalist Amish Devgan who was accused of making hurtful religious remarks.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of India extended its interim order against initiating any coercive action against journalist Amish Devgan for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The court further said that the interim order will continue and that investigation into the matter will also remain suspended.

Multiple FIRs were filed against Amish Devgan over his remarks during a news TV show. 5 FIRs had been lodged in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

Amish Devgan had allegedly made derogatory remarks on Moinuddin Chisti:

During the prime-time program, the anchor allegedly referred to saint Moinuddin Chisti using derogatory terms. But the anchor breathed a sigh of relief, as, on June 17, the apex court in its order had given him the protection from arrest. Amish later tweeted his apology and said that he was actually referring to Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji and instead named the Sufi saint, Chisti.

In a hearing conducted through a video link by the court, Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra and lawyer Mrinal Bharti appeared for Amish Devgan.

Arnab Goswami also got a clean-chit in a similar case last week:

In a similar matter, previously, Arnab Goswami, Republic’s editor-in-chief, was given interim relief by the Bombay High Court as it suspended two First Information Reports (FIRs) against him for allegedly making provocative and inflammatory remarks over the Palghar lynching incident and the migrant workers’ gathering outside of Bandra railway station in Mumbai.
