Controversial social media star Andrew Tate has been charged in Romania with rape, human trafficking and creating an organised crime group to exploit women physically.
His brother Tristan and two associates even face accusations. All have refused the allegations.
The Tate brothers were first detained at their Bucharest residence in December. In March, they were transferred from custody to home arrest following a declaration by a Romanian judge.
The charge deposited with the Bucharest court says that the four defendants created an organised criminal body in 2021 to execute human trafficking in Romania and other nations, including the US and the UK.
It names seven likely victims it says were recruited by the Tate brothers through deceitful promises of love and marriage. The charged seized assets, including properties, cars and around $300m (£235m) in cryptocurrency.
The trial will begin after some time and is anticipated to take some years. A Romanian judge has 60 days to study the case files before they can be sent to trial.
A representative for Andrew Tate, speaking on behalf of the brothers and the two associates, stated: “We embrace the opportunity it presents to demonstrate their innocence.”
There are even separate charges still under inquiry, which could lead to different charges, including money laundering and trafficking of children.
In 2016, Andrew Tate, a British-American ex-kickboxer, was fired from the British TV show Big Brother over a video which seemed to show him attacking a female.
He gained fame online, with Twitter banning him for saying females should “bear some responsibility” for being physically assaulted. He has since been reinstated.
Despite social media prohibitions, he gained fame, especially among young men, by promoting what he presented as a hyper-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle.
