Anupria Goenka Makes Powerful Cannes Debut with ‘My Body, My Choice’ Look

Actress Anupria Goenka made a striking debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, turning heads on the red carpet with a look that carried deep symbolic meaning. Attending the prestigious festival for her film Bombay Stories, screened at the Marché du Film section, Anupria chose her appearance to reflect the film’s powerful themes around female agency and societal judgement.

A Look That Speaks Louder Than Words

Anupria wore a carefully conceptualised Indo-Western ensemble featuring intricate ajrakh embroidery and a sari-inspired silhouette. One side of the outfit portrayed a conventionally acceptable image of a woman, while the other created a bare-chest illusion — a deliberate artistic choice to challenge how public perception shifts based solely on appearance. “Since Cannes is a huge global platform, I wanted my appearance to stand for something meaningful,” the actress said.

Symbolism in Every Detail

The colour palette was intentional — white representing the idea of purity that society imposes on women, and red accents signifying judgement and stigma. Taking the concept further, her jewellery was crafted from vintage rupee coins, symbolising how women are often assigned value based on societal expectations rather than their own identity.

Bombay Stories is inspired by celebrated Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story Hatak, with Anupria portraying a sex worker. The actress shared that working closely with this subject matter gave the message behind her red-carpet look a deeply personal dimension. Anupria was last seen in the horror-comedy Indian Institute of Zombies, where she plays Professor Briganza, a ghostbuster.
