Asha Bhosle Passes Away: A Look at Her Legendary Family Tree

Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, passed away on April 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in music and family. Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar — a renowned classical singer and stage actor — and homemaker Shevanti Mangeshkar, Asha grew up in a household where music was a way of life. When her father died young, her mother held the family together while Asha and her siblings stepped into the music industry to support them.

The Mangeshkar Siblings: India’s Most Musical Family

Asha was one of five musically gifted siblings. Her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar is widely regarded as the greatest playback singer in Indian history. Her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar became a celebrated composer, while sisters Usha and Meena Mangeshkar also carved out respected careers in music. Together, the Mangeshkars remain the most iconic musical family India has ever produced.

At just 16, Asha eloped with Ganpatrao Bhosle, a man 31 years her senior, against her family’s wishes. The turbulent marriage produced three children — Hemant, Varsha, and Anand — before the couple separated. Tragically, both Hemant and Varsha predeceased her, leaving Anand as her sole surviving child and closest support.

A Celebrated Second Marriage to RD Burman

In 1980, Asha married legendary composer Rahul Dev Burman, known as RD Burman or Pancham Da. Their personal and professional partnership produced some of Bollywood’s most beloved songs. RD Burman passed away in January 1994.

Asha is survived by her son Anand and granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, an emerging singer continuing the family’s extraordinary musical tradition.
